In a landmark decision, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given the green light to four major multi-tracking projects for Indian Railways.
With an estimated cost of ₹18,658 crore, these initiatives aim to augment railway capacity and streamline passenger and freight movement across Maharashtra, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh.
The approved projects—spanning 1,247 kilometers—include the Sambalpur-Jarapda 3rd and 4th line, Jharsuguda-Sason 3rd and 4th line, Kharsia-Naya Raipur-Parmalkasa 5th and 6th line, and Gondia-Balharshah doubling.
Expected to be completed by 2030-31, these efforts will ease congestion on busy routes and improve service reliability, aligning with the government’s PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan for seamless multi-modal connectivity.
Notably, these projects will support essential freight traffic involving coal, iron ore, steel, cement, and agricultural goods. In addition to boosting India’s logistics efficiency, they promise significant environmental benefits, including reducing CO2 emissions by 477 crore kg—equivalent to planting 19 crore trees—and cutting oil imports by 95 crore liters.
The construction phase of these projects is also set to generate 379 lakh human-days of employment, enhancing opportunities for local communities and supporting regional economic growth. These initiatives underline the government’s commitment to sustainable development and the vision of a “New India.”
