A brief security scare gripped Odisha’s pilgrim town of Puri on Thursday after several abandoned bags were found at a busy intersection, prompting fears of a possible bomb threat ahead of the annual Rath Yatra.
The incident occurred at Jatiababaji Square, where local residents noticed unattended bags and immediately alerted the police. Officers from the Puri Town Police Station rushed to the spot and secured the area before conducting a thorough inspection.
No Explosives Found During Search
After examining the suspicious bags, police recovered documents, clothes, ornaments and food items.
Officials confirmed that no explosives or hazardous materials were found during the search. However, the bags contained no information that could help identify their owners.
Police have launched an investigation to trace those responsible for leaving the bags unattended.
Destitute Persons Suspected
According to local reports, the bags may have belonged to a few destitute persons who allegedly fled the area after spotting a Police Control Room (PCR) patrol vehicle.
Police are verifying these claims as part of the ongoing investigation.
Heightened Vigil Ahead of Rath Yatra
The incident comes as Puri prepares for the Rath Yatra, one of India’s largest religious festivals, which attracts lakhs of devotees from across the country and abroad.
The discovery of unattended bags briefly raised concerns over security arrangements in the temple town.
However, police officials assured the public that comprehensive security measures are already in place to ensure the smooth and safe conduct of the festival.
Authorities said surveillance, patrolling and security checks have been intensified across sensitive locations in Puri ahead of the annual chariot festival.
