Authorities recovered the bodies of a young man and woman from the Brahmani river stream behind the Bireswaraya temple in Bitoala under Chandiposh police limits on Monday.
Villagers noticed a motorcycle and clothing lying near the riverbank for several hours. Consequently, they alerted Chandiposh police around 11 a.m. Police suspected foul play and immediately informed the Lahunipada Fire Department. As a result, fire service personnel launched a search operation in the river.
By 3 p.m., the rescue team recovered the body of the young woman. Shortly afterwards, they retrieved the body of the young man. Investigators later identified the deceased as Gyan Ranjan Swain (32) of Tilikanagar village in Bantamunda, Rourkela, and P. Manisha (19) of LIC Colony, Uditnagar.
Police seized the motorcycle (registration OD14DL2181) from the spot. Furthermore, they began a detailed investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths. Officials stated that the cause remains unclear, although they are examining whether drowning or other factors were involved.
The incident has unsettled local residents, and authorities assured that a thorough probe will continue. In addition, investigators plan to analyse evidence from the scene to establish the sequence of events.
