Police in Bengaluru have registered a case against a university professor for allegedly using derogatory language and referring to a student as a “terrorist” multiple times during a classroom interaction.

The accused, identified as Muralidhar Deshpande, has been suspended pending a detailed internal inquiry following widespread backlash over the incident.

Allegations of Repeated Derogatory Remarks

According to the student, the professor allegedly targeted him based on his religion during a lecture on March 26. The student claimed he was called a “terrorist” at least 13 times after a disagreement in class.

The remarks reportedly included references to ongoing international conflicts and political contexts, intensifying concerns over discrimination and inappropriate conduct in an academic environment.

Police Action and Legal Proceedings

Authorities confirmed that a case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Sections 299 and 352.

Police said the action was initiated suo motu after a video of the incident went viral on social media. Officials are currently collecting evidence and are expected to question the professor as part of the investigation.

University Orders Inquiry

The university administration has launched an internal investigation into the matter. The Vice-Chancellor assured that appropriate action will be taken based on the findings of the inquiry.

Students have also alleged that some individuals were suspended after they objected to the professor’s behaviour, raising additional concerns about handling dissent within the institution.

Concerns Over Campus Inclusivity

The incident has sparked a wider conversation about inclusivity, respectful dialogue, and the responsibilities of educators in maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment.

Educational institutions are expected to uphold values of equality and mutual respect, ensuring that students from all backgrounds feel secure and respected.
