The India Meteorological Department issued a thunderstorm alert for Odisha, warning of heavy rain and strong winds across 16 districts today.
Officials confirmed that Kalbaisakhi showers will lash several parts of the state. Winds may blow at speeds ranging from 50 to 60 km per hour, raising concerns for coastal and southern regions.
Districts under alert include Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Khordha, and Cuttack. Weather experts noted that these areas may experience dry conditions in the morning, followed by rainfall in the evening.
Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Ganjam districts also face similar conditions. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and rain are expected in these regions. Authorities advised residents to remain cautious and avoid open areas during the storm.
The IMD emphasised that the yellow warning covers both northern and southern Odisha. Farmers and fishermen have been urged to take preventive measures to minimise risks.
The thunderstorm alert highlights the seasonal impact of Kalbaisakhi, a weather phenomenon known for sudden rain and gusty winds. Local administrations have prepared emergency teams to respond to any incidents.
