A leadership tussle appears to be brewing within the Bar Council of India (BCI), with Co-Chairman and senior advocate YR Sadashiva Reddy calling for Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra’s resignation, saying that “the Bar deserves better.”
Reddy has raised several concerns over the functioning of the BCI and cited alleged ₹150 crore fund diversion, family appointments and the action taken against NALSAR students among the reasons for his demand, according to a report by Live Law.
Reddy raises concerns over BCI functioning
The demand for Mishra’s resignation comes amid controversy over the BCI’s recent handling of matters concerning legal education and students.
Reddy has particularly questioned the council’s action against students of the National Academy of Legal Studies and Research (NALSAR), describing the move as “illegal”.
The issue has added to growing scrutiny of the BCI’s decisions and internal functioning. Reddy’s public demand also highlights an apparent disagreement within the council’s senior leadership.
₹150 crore allegation and family appointments
Among the concerns cited by Reddy is an allegation involving the diversion of ₹150 crore in funds. He has also raised questions over appointments involving family members.
The allegations are significant because the BCI plays a key role in regulating the legal profession and overseeing standards of legal education in India.
Reddy’s call for Mishra’s resignation therefore puts the spotlight on the council’s governance, financial decisions and administrative practices.
NALSAR controversy adds to pressure
The dispute over NALSAR students has emerged as another major point of contention. Reddy has criticised the action taken against the students and questioned the legality of the BCI’s approach.
His statement that “the Bar deserves better” underscores the seriousness of the disagreement and reflects his call for greater accountability within the organisation.
The latest development could intensify the debate over the BCI’s leadership and decision-making at a time when its actions are already attracting attention from the legal fraternity.
