Odisha is set to witness a breather from continuous heavy rainfall starting Sunday.

However, the respite may be short-lived, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts that a new weather system forming over the Bay of Bengal will likely trigger fresh heavy showers across several districts next week.

According to Manorama Mohanty, Director of the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, rainfall intensity across the state will gradually decline from Sunday onward. “Rainfall activity is expected to subside from Sunday. However, a cyclonic circulation forming next week is likely to bring heavy rain to isolated regions in the state once again,” she noted.

According to the regional weather office, isolated heavy rainfall is expected in Kendujhar and Mayurbhanj districts on Tuesday and Wednesday. During this period, light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms is likely across many parts of Odisha.

New Weather System by Late September

As the monsoon season approaches its final phase by the end of the month, a low-pressure area forming in the Bay of Bengal could reactivate monsoon conditions over the state:

  • Around September 20: An upper-air cyclonic circulation is expected to develop over the North Andaman Sea and adjoining Thailand region.

  • By September 22: Moving northwestward, the system—likely intensifying into a cyclonic circulation or low-pressure area—is forecast to reach the coasts of South Odisha and North Andhra Pradesh.

Monsoon Performance So Far

Odisha has recorded above-normal monsoon rainfall this season, largely driven by consecutive low-pressure systems over the Bay of Bengal. Almost all districts have received substantial rainfall, with Gajapati being the sole exception, recording a 20% rainfall deficit between June 1 and September 12.

Meteorologists believe the upcoming weather system could help narrow deficits and maintain strong monsoon activity through the end of September.
