Following the conclusion of Ajit Agarkar’s tenure as BCCI chief selector, the search for his replacement has taken a fresh turn.
As the application deadline for the West Zone selector’s post ended on Wednesday, former India wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel opted not to apply, contrary to initial media speculation.
According to reports, former spinner Ramesh Powar, previously expected to lead the junior selection panel, has now emerged as a candidate for the senior West Zone selector role.
Meanwhile, reports indicate that Parthiv Patel’s decision was influenced by the growing role of VVS Laxman, Head of the Centre of Excellence, who is set to attend all selection meetings moving forward.
In light of these developments, Pragyan Ojha is expected to continue as the interim chairman of the selection committee. To attract prominent cricketing figures, the BCCI has enhanced flexibility in its pay policy, increasing the selection panel’s budget for 2026-27 to Rs 19.35 crore.
While the board reportedly approached several veteran players with nearly 100 Test appearances, those offers were declined. The BCCI is now evaluating candidates whose vision aligns with the current leadership structure ahead of upcoming major tournaments.
