Violent protests erupted outside the United States Consulate in Karachi on Sunday after the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in US–Israeli strikes.
Demonstrators attacked security barricades with sticks and stones, forcing authorities to deploy tear gas and impose road closures to prevent the mob from breaching the compound.
Large groups of protesters, many linked to Shia organisations, marched along MT Khan Road and Nashim Chowrangi toward the diplomatic mission. Clashes broke out as security forces attempted to disperse the crowd. Witnesses reported parts of the consulate’s entrance area being stormed, with sections set ablaze during the unrest.
The protests followed coordinated US–Israeli strikes on Iran that killed several senior Iranian officials and led to Khamenei’s death. Anger spread quickly across Pakistan, with Karachi becoming the focal point of demonstrations condemning the assassination. Security forces maintained a heavy presence around the consulate to prevent further escalation.
Authorities confirmed that tear gas was used to disperse protesters and restore order. Road closures around the diplomatic mission remained in place as police reinforced barricades.
