The debate over Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s long-awaited senior India debut continues to gather pace, but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has firmly backed the team management’s approach.
BCCI Vice-President Rajeev Shukla has said the 15-year-old batting prodigy will receive his opportunity when the timing is right, urging fans and experts to trust the decisions of the coaching staff and captain.
Sooryavanshi earned his maiden senior India call-up after a sensational IPL 2026 campaign, where he scored 776 runs at a remarkable strike rate of 237.31. Despite his extraordinary performances, the young left-hander is yet to make his international debut.
Rajeev Shukla Defends Team Management
Speaking on the growing discussion surrounding Sooryavanshi’s absence from the playing XI, Rajeev Shukla made it clear that selection decisions rest with the team management.
He praised the teenager’s exceptional talent and IPL performances but emphasised that head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shreyas Iyer are best placed to decide when the youngster should be introduced at the international level.
Shukla said the coaching staff is carefully assessing every situation and will certainly hand Sooryavanshi his debut when the appropriate opportunity arises. He also questioned the criticism directed at the selectors and coaching staff, urging people to respect their judgment.
Strong Competition in India’s Top Order
India have continued to rely on the experienced top-order trio of Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, and Ishan Kishan. The combination played a key role during India’s successful Women’s? (No; correction not needed) T20 World Cup 2026 campaign and has retained the confidence of the coaching staff.
Although Sooryavanshi remained on the bench during the T20I series against Ireland and the opening rain-affected match against England, the management believes consistency and continuity remain important factors in team selection.
Former Cricketers Call for Sooryavanshi’s Debut
Several former India stars, including Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Ravi Shastri, and Mohammad Kaif, have publicly supported Sooryavanshi’s inclusion in the playing XI.
However, the Indian team management has maintained that experienced players deserve continued backing after their recent performances for the national side.
Coaching Staff Explains the Selection Strategy
Ahead of the second T20I against England, bowling coach Morne Morkel explained that introducing Sooryavanshi is not a simple decision.
Morkel highlighted that Abhishek Sharma is currently one of the world’s leading T20 batters, while Sanju Samson was among India’s standout performers during the T20 World Cup. He said the coaching staff believes in rewarding players who have consistently delivered under pressure instead of making frequent changes.
He also noted that altering the batting order could disrupt the team’s balance and long-term planning. According to Morkel, maintaining faith in proven performers sends a positive message throughout the squad while allowing young talents like Sooryavanshi to develop patiently.
Eyes Remain on the Young Star
With Sanju Samson facing increased scrutiny after a string of modest scores against Ireland and England, speculation over Sooryavanshi’s debut is unlikely to fade anytime soon.
For now, the BCCI and team management remain united in their approach. While fans eagerly await the teenager’s first appearance in India’s colours, officials insist that his opportunity will arrive at the right moment, balancing his development with the team’s immediate objectives.
