A low-pressure area over the North Andaman Sea and adjoining East-Central Bay of Bengal is moving west-northwestwards and is likely to intensify into a deep depression before approaching the South Odisha-North Andhra Pradesh coast, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
The system, which formed over the North Andaman Sea and neighbourhood on Saturday, has moved west-northwestwards and now lies over the North Andaman Sea and adjoining East-Central Bay of Bengal.
According to the latest IMD forecast, the system is very likely to intensify into a depression over the East-Central Bay of Bengal on September 21 and further strengthen into a deep depression over the West-Central Bay of Bengal on September 22.
It is then likely to continue moving in a west-northwestward direction and reach the West-Central and adjoining Northwest Bay of Bengal near the South Odisha-North Andhra Pradesh coasts around the morning of September 23.
Bay Of Bengal Wind Warning
The developing system is expected to produce squally weather over the sea during the coming days.
The IMD has forecast winds of 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph, over the Andaman Sea and adjoining East-Central Bay of Bengal on September 20.
Wind speeds are likely to increase to 45-55 kmph, gusting to 65 kmph, over the East-Central and adjoining Northeast Bay of Bengal on September 21.
On September 22, winds of 50-60 kmph, gusting to 70 kmph, are expected over the Central Bay of Bengal, while adjoining North and South Bay areas could experience winds of 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph.
The system is expected to strengthen further on September 23, with winds of 55-65 kmph, gusting to 75 kmph, likely over the West-Central and adjoining Northwest Bay of Bengal.
These conditions are expected to persist until the evening of September 24.
Odisha-Andhra Coast To See Squally Winds

Meanwhile, winds of 40-50 kmph, gusting to 60 kmph, are likely along and off the West Bengal and South Andhra Pradesh coasts from September 23 to 24.
Sea Conditions To Remain Rough
Sea conditions are expected to deteriorate as the system intensifies.
The sea is likely to remain rough over the Andaman Sea and adjoining East-Central Bay of Bengal on September 20.
It is expected to become rough to very rough over:
- East-Central and adjoining Northeast Bay of Bengal on September 21
- Central Bay of Bengal on September 22
- West-Central and adjoining Northwest Bay of Bengal from September 23
Rough to very rough seas are also likely along and off the North Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal coasts until September 24.
Fishermen Advised Against Venturing Into Sea
The IMD has advised fishermen not to venture into the affected sea areas during the specified period.
Fishermen have been advised to avoid:
- Andaman Sea: Until September 21
- East-Central and adjoining Northeast Bay of Bengal: September 20 to September 22
