The Australian Open organisers awarded Stan Wawrinka a wildcard entry for the 2026 edition, marking his farewell season on the professional tour.
The 40-year-old Swiss star, currently ranked World No. 156, confirmed that this year will be his last before retirement. Wawrinka, who famously captured his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in 2014, rose to World No. 3 that season and reached two other semifinals.
Reflecting on the opportunity, Wawrinka said: “To have the chance to play the AO at the beginning of my final year on tour means the world to me.”
In addition, the organisers handed the final three wildcards to Wawrinka, Jordan Thompson, and Chris O’Connell, ensuring strong Australian representation in the draw.
Consequently, Wawrinka’s farewell appearance in Melbourne promises to be one of the tournament’s emotional highlights, as fans prepare to celebrate and bid farewell to one of tennis’s most resilient champions.
