A feast organized on the historic Atharanala Bridge in Puri has sparked widespread outrage after visuals showed outsiders lighting stoves, cooking meat, and eating directly on the monument.
The incident raised serious concerns about the misuse of a protected heritage site.
Witnesses reported open cooking activities on the bridge, including the preparation of meat dishes using firewood and makeshift stoves. Locals expressed anger, questioning how such activities were permitted within the 100-meter protected zone, where construction, excavation, or feasting is strictly prohibited under heritage conservation rules.
The Atharanala Bridge, a centuries-old structure and iconic gateway to Puri, holds immense cultural and historical significance. Residents criticised the blatant disregard for heritage norms and demanded immediate action against those responsible.
Authorities have yet to issue an official response, further fueling public discontent. Heritage activists stressed that the incident highlights the urgent need for stricter monitoring and enforcement around protected monuments. They warned that repeated violations could damage the structural integrity and sanctity of Atharanala.
