Zubeen Garg, one of Assam’s most beloved musicians and the voice behind the iconic Bollywood hit “Ya Ali” from Gangster, has passed away following a scuba diving accident in Singapore.
Garg was in Singapore to perform at the Northeast Festival, but reportedly experienced breathing difficulties during a diving session. He lost consciousness and was rushed to Singapore General Hospital, where he was declared dead in the ICU around 2:30 PM IST.
The news has sent shockwaves across the music industry and among fans. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed deep sorrow, stating, “Zubeen’s voice had an unmatched ability to energize people… He has left a void that will never be filled.” Union Ministers Sarbananda Sonowal and Kiren Rijiju also paid tribute, calling his death an “irreparable loss” and mourning the passing of a “magical voice”.
Zubeen Garg’s career spanned decades, with contributions in over 40 languages and mastery of 12 musical instruments. He was not only a singer but also a composer, actor, and cultural icon in the Northeast. His music blended traditional Assamese sounds with contemporary styles, making him a bridge between generations and regions.
