Australia women’s cricketer Ashleigh Gardner has come under renewed scrutiny after her estranged wife, Monica Wright, criticised Cricket Australia’s handling of allegations involving the all-rounder and fellow cricketer Georgia Voll.
Wright has questioned why Cricket Australia has not publicly addressed the allegations and argued that Gardner’s leadership role should face scrutiny.
The claims remain allegations, and Cricket Australia has described the matter as private while saying workplace relationships are covered by its policies.
Monica Wright questions Cricket Australia’s response
Wright told Code Sports that she believes players who represent Australia have a responsibility to maintain high standards, particularly when they hold leadership positions.
“I think if you’re privileged enough to represent your country and be seen as a role model, there’s a responsibility to hold yourself to a high moral standard,” Wright said.
She also questioned Cricket Australia’s decision not to comment publicly on the matter.
Wright alleged that the situation involved a relationship with a junior member of staff and raised concerns about a potential power imbalance. She argued that such allegations should be considered when assessing a player’s leadership responsibilities.
Cricket Australia calls matter private
Cricket Australia has maintained that the issue is a private and personal matter.
In a statement responding to Wright’s comments, the governing body said relationships within its workforce must comply with its Respect at Work policy.
“Cricket Australia ensures all relationships within our workforce comply with our Respect at Work policy,” the organisation said.
It added that appropriate conflict-of-interest arrangements are put in place to support leadership responsibilities and maintain the integrity of team processes.
What did Monica Wright allege?
Wright first spoke publicly about the matter after sharing a Daily Mail report on Instagram. She later indicated that she wanted to provide her own account of the events.
In a subsequent social media post, Wright shared a photograph of Georgia Voll and alleged that Voll was the person involved in the reported infidelity.
The allegations have not been independently established.
Gardner and Wright married in April 2025. Their relationship later came under strain, according to reports cited by Australian media. The couple have since separated, with Gardner reportedly moving out of their Sydney home.
Ashleigh Gardner remains key player for Australia
Despite the controversy away from the field, Gardner continues to play an important role for Australia.
The all-rounder remains part of the national setup and has continued to receive backing from within the cricketing community.
Gardner has also been a key figure in Australia’s recent success in women’s cricket. She was part of the Australian side that maintained its dominant record in the Women’s T20 World Cup.
The controversy surrounding her personal life, however, has now raised questions about how cricket authorities handle allegations involving players in leadership positions.
For now, Cricket Australia has maintained that its workplace policies apply to relationships within its workforce and has not indicated any change to Gardner’s role based on the allegations.
