Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah arrived in Srinagar today to chair a critical high-level security review meeting in response to a devastating terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Anantnag district, Jammu and Kashmir.

The attack, which took place earlier in the day in the picturesque Baisaran Valley, claimed the lives of at least 26 people, including tourists, two foreign nationals, a Navy officer, and local residents, while injuring several others. The Resistance Front (TRF), a shadow outfit of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, has claimed responsibility for the brutal assault, prompting an urgent response from the central and state governments.

Upon landing in Srinagar, Shah was received by Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, and senior officials from the Jammu and Kashmir Police, Indian Army, and intelligence agencies. The high-level meeting, convened at Raj Bhavan, focused on assessing the current security situation, strengthening counter-terrorism measures, and ensuring the safety of residents and tourists in the region. Key attendees included top brass from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Border Security Force (BSF), and other security agencies.

In a statement following the meeting, Shah condemned the attack as a “cowardly act” and vowed that the perpetrators would face “the harshest consequences.” He emphasised the government’s commitment to rooting out terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, stating, “Those who seek to disrupt peace in the region will be dealt with an iron hand. Our security forces are fully equipped to ensure justice is served.” Shah also briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who directed authorities to take swift and decisive action to neutralise the threat and support the victims.

The Pahalgam attack has sent shockwaves across the nation, with the serene valley, known as the “Valley of Shepherds”, turning into a scene of tragedy.  Among the victims were families on vacation, adventure enthusiasts, and local guides. The attack has raised concerns about the safety of tourists in Jammu and Kashmir, a region that has seen a surge in tourism following years of relative stability.

Security forces have launched extensive anti-terror operations in Anantnag and adjoining areas to track down the perpetrators. Checkpoints have been established, and intelligence agencies are working to identify and dismantle TRF networks in the region. The Jammu and Kashmir administration has set up helplines to assist affected tourists and their families, while hospitals in Srinagar and Anantnag are treating the injured.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed solidarity with the victims, stating, “This is a dark day for Jammu and Kashmir. We stand united against terrorism and will ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.” Lieutenant Governor Sinha announced financial assistance for the families of the deceased and assured comprehensive support for the injured.

As the nation mourns the loss of lives, the government’s swift response signals a renewed focus on combating terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir. Shah’s visit and the high-level meeting underscore the Centre’s determination to restore peace and ensure the safety of all in the region.
