New York: American sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson, who was set to participate in Tokyo Olympics this month, could miss the Games after testing positive for marijuana.

The positive test came at the US Olympic trials last month where Richardson established herself as a gold medal contender by winning the 100m in 10.86 seconds.

A 30-day ban backdated to the time of the adverse result could leave Richardson clear to race in the 4x100m relay at the Olympics in the first week of August, if she is selected by USATF.

Richardson could serve a one to three-month suspension for the adverse analytical finding.

The test was carried out at the US Olympic Trials.

Since January 1, 2021, the drug has been classified as a ‘Substance of Abuse’ by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and currently carries a maximum four-year ban.

Richardson has said she took marijuana after learning about the death of her biological mother. Richardson, who was raised by her grandmother, said she learned about the death from a reporter during an interview and called it triggering and “definitely nerve-shocking.”
