AIIMS Bhubaneswar is set to revolutionize liver care in India by launching a dedicated 10-bed Liver Transplant ICU within the next two months.
This will make it the first AIIMS institution in the country to offer such a specialized facility.
The new ICU will cater to patients suffering from advanced liver cirrhosis (stages B and C) and children born with biliary atresia—a condition where the bile duct fails to develop. The facility promises state-of-the-art surgical care and robust infection-control measures.
While private hospitals charge ₹20–30 lakh for liver transplants, AIIMS Bhubaneswar will offer the procedure at approximately ₹5 lakh. Patients with Ayushman Bharat cards may pay as little as ₹2.5–3 lakh. The institute is also working to provide organ preservation solutions free of cost to further ease the financial burden on patients.
A specialized team of doctors has already been formed to oversee transplant procedures, marking a significant step forward in accessible and affordable healthcare in eastern India.
