Aamir Khan will receive the first-ever RK Laxman Award for Excellence at a grand ceremony in Pune on November 23, 2025.
The RK Laxman family introduced the award to honour Khan’s contributions to Indian cinema and to celebrate the legacy of the legendary cartoonist RK Laxman.
The event, scheduled at the MCA Cricket Stadium, will begin at 5 PM and include a live concert by Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman. Usha Laxman, daughter-in-law of RK Laxman, confirmed the details and expressed the family’s pride in launching the award. She described the ceremony as their most heartfelt tribute to Laxman’s cultural impact.
Over the years, Aamir Khan has built a reputation for choosing socially conscious films such as Lagaan, Taare Zameen Par, and Dangal. His work consistently challenges cinematic norms and sparks public dialogue. By selecting Khan as the first recipient, the RK Laxman family highlights his creative brilliance and lasting influence.
The RK Laxman Award for Excellence will annually honour individuals who embody originality and inspire thoughtful engagement. The family believes Khan’s legacy aligns with the spirit of RK Laxman’s work, which captured the essence of Indian society with wit and insight.
RK Laxman remains one of India’s most celebrated cartoonists. He created The Common Man, a character that reflected the humour and struggles of everyday life. His long-running cartoon strip You Said It and his illustrations for Malgudi Days, written by his brother RK Narayan, continue to resonate with audiences.
Throughout his career, Laxman earned prestigious honours including the Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan, and an honorary doctorate from the University of Mysore.
