A Ganesh idol immersion procession turned tragic in Jatni after a concrete slab of a two-storey building collapsed, killing one person and injuring more than 14 others on Sunday.
The incident occurred near Punjab National Bank, where a large crowd had gathered to watch the immersion procession. Following the collapse, the injured were rushed to Capital Hospital and AIIMS Bhubaneswar for treatment.
Concrete slab collapses during Ganesh immersion
According to preliminary reports, a portion of the concrete slab allegedly collapsed amid intense vibrations during the procession, where loud DJ music with heavy bass was reportedly being played.
However, the exact cause of the structural collapse has not yet been established. Police have launched an investigation to determine what triggered the incident and whether vibrations from the sound systems contributed to the collapse.
The incident has raised concerns over the use of high-volume DJ systems during immersion processions, particularly in crowded residential and market areas.
Questions over alleged violation of restrictions
The use of DJ systems during the procession has also come under scrutiny amid reports that restrictions were allegedly in place and permission had not been obtained.
Several puja committees were reportedly using high-volume music systems despite the restrictions. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the procession and whether any rules were violated.

Police are examining the site and gathering information to determine the precise sequence of events leading to the slab collapse.
The investigation will also establish whether the condition of the old structure, crowd pressure, vibrations or other factors contributed to the accident.
