What prompts me to write this piece is the alarming array of conflicts unfolding before us—from the regional conflagrations in Israel, Gaza, and Ukraine to the escalating tensions involving Iran and USA, alongside countless ethnic, racial, religious, economic, and political clashes across the globe. Many of these flashpoints carry the dangerous potential to escalate from regional skirmishes into a catastrophic world war, dragging the entire human race into their vortex.
This friction is not confined to international geopolitics; we witness it daily in family settings, social groups, and national politics. It is deeply tragic that human beings—who rightly pride themselves on extraordinary breakthroughs in science, technology, medicine, and the arts—remain trapped in such a self-destructive state. If intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe, it would look upon our species with utter aghast at our sheer folly in choosing perpetual conflict over peaceful coexistence.
My call for cultivating a “global mind” in every individual is neither utopian nor idealistic—attitudes that offer little value in practical life. Rather, it is a deeply rational and achievable state of being rooted in the wisdom of active living. To possess a global mind is simply the sanest and most logical way to exist. I am convinced that every human being is inherently capable of this perspective; yet, through narrow, self-centred thinking and action, we have shrunk our vision, rendering ourselves incapable of addressing humanity’s collective challenges.
A deeper study of world conflicts reveals a recurring truth: when violence persists over time, debating which side holds the moral high ground becomes a futile exercise. Misdeeds committed by one party are answered with even greater brutality by the other. As time marches on, each side points to the grievances inflicted by its opponent to justify perpetuating the cycle. This dynamic has held since the dawn of human history. The only way to break this vicious cycle of violence and elevate human consciousness is through individuals who possess a global mind—one that prioritises the welfare of humanity as a whole over the parochial interests of a few.
Regrettably, in our current era, we suffer from a severe leadership vacuum. Virtually no national leader today demonstrates even a semblance of a global mind—one genuinely concerned with the well-being of all humanity rather than strictly serving narrow national interests. While many speak fervently of global trade, global supply chains, and global technology, these concepts are driven by economic self-interest and have nothing to do with a global mindset.
Has the world ever seen leaders endowed with such a universal vision? They have existed, though rarely. In India, Mahatma Gandhi’s pathbreaking struggle against colonial rule through non-violence (ahimsa) was a profound demonstration of a global mind elevating human consciousness. In South Africa, Nelson Mandela stood against apartheid against all odds to uphold the dignity and unity of the human race. Leaders of similar calibre in America include Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr. Perhaps every nation, at some point in its history, has been blessed with such figures. Furthermore, spiritual luminaries across traditions—such as Ramana Maharshi, Sri Ramakrishna, Swami Vivekananda, and J. Krishnamurti—have demonstrated this universal outlook in modern times.
However, the urgent need of our hour is not just for isolated leaders or saints to embody this vision, but for every ordinary citizen to adopt a global mind where the larger good of humanity towers over selfish motives.
A global mind flowers when self-interest ceases to be the sole purpose of existence. Tragically, modern human life is largely driven by ambition, greed, short-term gain, and the doctrine of “me before everyone else.” This mindset bleeds from the individual into the family, the community, and ultimately the state, echoing on the global stage as “my country first; the rest can perish.” This narrow parochialism is the root cause of all our strife. Until human consciousness ascends to recognise humanity as one interconnected family, conflict will remain our permanent condition.
Cynics will inevitably dismiss an all-encompassing global mind as an impossibility. But at critical junctures in history, we must dare to ask the impossible. If humanity remains confined strictly to the realm of what currently seems “possible,” our plight will never improve. We stand at a perilously dire moment where asking this fundamental question is no longer optional.
There must arise a powerful, collective voice among peace-loving people everywhere to tell their leaders unequivocally: violence is an unacceptable instrument for resolving disputes, whether national or international. It is a shameful failure of human intelligence to resort to warfare when human life is far too precious to be squandered. Rather than waging destruction, leaders must dedicate their energy and resources to uplifting their people and serving the broader good of humanity.
