‘Amazed It Didn’t Come Apart’: Aviation Experts Shocked as Flydubai Jet Survives 16,000-Foot Mid-Air Plunge

Aviation safety experts have expressed complete disbelief after a Flydubai Boeing 737 MAX 8 survived an extreme descent of roughly 16,000 feet in under a minute following a violent cockpit attack, landing safely in Saudi Arabia despite sustaining structural damage.

Flight FZ1073 was en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv carrying 174 passengers when an altercation broke out inside the cockpit. Officials state that the co-pilot stabbed Indian Captain Smit Machchhar in an apparent attempt to seize control and crash the aircraft.

The resulting confrontation sent the jet into a terrifying dive, dropping from 33,000 feet to 17,000 feet. Flightradar24 data revealed that the sharpest phase of the descent saw the plane plunge 14,125 feet in just 29 seconds. The aerodynamic stress generated during the fall was so severe that a major portion of the tail rudder was ripped off.

A Narrow Escape From Disaster

Former United Airlines pilot and aviation safety analyst Steve Arroyo admitted he was stunned that the airframe held together under such extreme forces.

”That was a serious descent and strong aerodynamic forces on that rudder for that to happen. I’m just amazed the aircraft didn’t come apart,” Arroyo told AP.

Jeff Guzzetti, a former crash investigator with the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), noted that altitude was the single factor preventing an irreversible tragedy.

”It is remarkable they were able to pull out of that dive. What saved them is there was enough altitude left for them to recover,” Guzzetti explained, adding that pulling out would have been nearly impossible had the drop continued below 10,000 feet.

Heroic Intervention Overpowers Attacker

As the aircraft dropped rapidly, triggering immense G-forces in the cabin, passengers and crew members rushed to respond. Despite his injuries, Captain Machchhar fought back and managed to unlock the cockpit door. Passengers breached the flight deck and helped overpower the attacker, allowing control to be restored.

The pilot issued a panicked distress “squawk” call requesting an immediate emergency landing and medical assistance. The sudden plunge and emergency signal briefly prompted Israel to scramble fighter jets over fears of a hijacking. The aircraft turned back toward Saudi Arabia and executed a safe landing at Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Tabuk, where both pilots were immediately hospitalized.

Aviation expert Sanat Kaul described the foiled attack as a possible suicide attempt and praised Captain Machchhar’s quick thinking, calling for a thorough international investigation into crew security protocols and mental health vetting.
