A heartbreaking incident unfolded at Nadapur village under Baisinga police limits in Mayurbhanj district when a six-year-old boy lost his life after falling into an uncovered, rain-filled septic tank on Thursday evening.
The deceased minor has been identified as Arjun Bindhani, son of Laxmidhar Bindhani from Nuagaon.
According to local sources, Arjun’s mother, Anjali, was working as a labourer at an under-construction building inside the Nadapur hospital premises. Arjun had accompanied his mother to the site. While playing nearby, the young boy wandered close to an unfinished septic tank. Due to continuous heavy rainfall, the open pit was completely filled with rainwater and remained unnoticed, leading to the fatal fall.
When Arjun suddenly went missing, his frantic mother and fellow site workers launched a search operation. Suspecting he might have slipped into the inundated tank, they searched the waters and managed to pull him out around 8:30 PM. He was immediately rushed to the Betnoti Hospital, where attending doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the region and triggered widespread anger among the locals. Villagers alleged that they had previously requested both the contractor and the site engineer to fence off or properly cover the under-construction tank to prevent accidents. However, their warnings went unheeded.
Community members maintain that severe negligence and a complete disregard for basic construction safety measures cost an innocent child his life. Meanwhile, the authorities at Betnoti Hospital have informed the police, and further investigation into the matter is underway.
