The Department of Handlooms, Textiles and Handicrafts, Government of Odisha, today launched the State‑Level Special Handicrafts Exhibition “Utkalaa: Shri Ganesh” at Ekamra Haat.
The exhibition, being held for the first time, will continue till September 13 and remain open daily from 11 AM to 9 PM.
A total of 34 artisans from 16 districts are participating, with 33 stalls inaugurated by Minister of Cooperation, Handlooms, Textiles and Handicrafts Pradeep Bal Samanta. Commissioner‑cum‑Secretary Guha Poonam Tapas Kumar and other senior officials were present at the launch.
The exhibition, themed “Shri Ganesh”, features Ganesha idols and artworks crafted from clay, wood, stone, terracotta, paddy, coconut coir, brass, bell metal, and palm leaves, alongside traditional Pattachitra paintings. Organised ahead of Ganesh Puja, the event combines display and sale, offering artisans direct access to customers.
“Utkalaa” is envisioned as a brand identity for Odisha’s rich handloom and handicraft traditions, aligning with ‘Vocal for Local’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’. By connecting artisans directly with buyers, the initiative aims to boost incomes, strengthen the local economy, and preserve cultural heritage.
Just as Lord Ganesha symbolises auspicious beginnings and prosperity, “Utkalaa” marks a new journey in Odisha’s handicrafts sector.
