CM Vijay Delimitation Stand Sparks Row; DMK, AIADMK Allege U-Turn

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister S Joseph Vijay has triggered a political controversy over his government’s position on parliamentary delimitation, with the DMK and AIADMK accusing him of making a “U-turn” on the issue.

Speaking at the 31st meeting of the Southern Zonal Council in Mahabalipuram on Thursday, Vijay urged the Centre to provide a clear legislative assurance that southern states would not lose their share of representation in Parliament because of their success in controlling population growth.

“I urge the Union government to provide a clear legislative assurance that no state will suffer a reduction in its percentage of representation in Parliament on account of its success in population stabilisation,” Vijay said.

He argued that such an assurance would promote fairness, protect the federal balance and strengthen the confidence of states in democratic institutions.

Why Vijay’s remarks triggered criticism

The controversy erupted because Vijay did not explicitly repeat the Tamil Nadu Assembly resolution passed on August 12, which called for the 543 Lok Sabha seats to be permanently frozen and the existing allocation of seats among states to be retained.

The omission prompted criticism from both the ruling party’s political rivals.

DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai accused Vijay of “flip-flopping” on delimitation, while the AIADMK described the TVK government’s position as a complete “U-turn”.

The AIADMK’s IT Wing questioned why the government had passed a resolution on the issue only to subsequently alter its position.

TVK says there is no change in Vijay’s position

The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) defended the chief minister and rejected the Opposition’s allegations.

The party said Vijay’s speech presented a broader vision aimed at protecting the existing representation of southern states that have successfully implemented population-control measures.

According to the TVK, the August 12 Assembly resolution provides the specific framework for achieving that objective, while Vijay’s remarks at the Southern Zonal Council focused on seeking a legislative assurance from the Centre.

The party also accused critics of spreading misleading interpretations of the government’s position on delimitation.

Tamil Nadu Minister for Energy Resources and Law CTR Nirmalkumar reiterated the government’s position while speaking to reporters outside the meeting.

“There is no change in TVK’s stance on the delimitation issue. There is no change in our position that the number of Lok Sabha seats should remain at 543,” he said.

Why delimitation matters to southern states

The delimitation debate has become politically sensitive in southern India because states that have achieved lower population growth fear that a future redistribution of parliamentary seats based primarily on population could reduce their relative representation.

Vijay’s latest remarks seek to address that concern by asking the Centre to ensure that states are not penalised electorally for successfully implementing population-stabilisation policies.

The dispute now puts the TVK government under pressure to clarify how its demand for protecting southern representation aligns with the Assembly’s resolution to retain the existing 543-seat Lok Sabha structure.
