A 52‑year‑old woman, Hemalata Mohanta, died and her husband, Birabhadra Mohanta, was critically injured when the wall of their house collapsed late Monday night in Mayurbhanj district.
Reports said the couple, residents of Badasahi under Badampahar police station limits, were asleep when a neighbouring wall gave way due to incessant rain and crashed onto their house wall around 3 am. Both walls collapsed, burying the couple under debris.
Rescue teams, aided by locals, used a JCB machine to free them. Hemalata was declared dead at the Badampahada Community Health Centre, while Birabhadra was shifted to Rairangpur Sub‑Divisional Hospital in critical condition.
Police have registered a case of unnatural death and launched an investigation. Officials noted that similar wall collapses have been reported across Mayurbhanj following heavy rainfall.
In a related incident in neighbouring Baleshwar district, a house wall collapse in Kapasuda under Jaleswar block killed a grandmother and her grandson, while the granddaughter was critically injured.
