A massive earthquake measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale struck Colombia on Tuesday morning, shaking the nation and sending shockwaves across its borders.
The quake, which hit at 7:34 am local time, was centered near San Jose del Palmar in the Choco department at a depth of 107 kilometers.
As per reports, there are more than 70 fatalities, with many more injured and trapped under collapsed structures.
The devastation was particularly severe in Pereira and in Manizales. Rescue teams are working tirelessly to pull survivors from the rubble, while hospitals are overwhelmed with the injured.
The tremors were felt across Colombia, including in Bogotá and Medellín, and extended into neighbouring Venezuela, sparking panic among residents.
Videos shared on social media showed buildings swaying, people rushing into the streets, and emergency sirens blaring.
Despite the quake’s magnitude, the U.S. Tsunami Warning System confirmed that no tsunami threat was issued. However, authorities urged coastal residents to remain vigilant.
