Khordha–Balangir NH‑57, Aug 5: Tension flared near Rangamatia close to Harekrushnapur after police seized a container allegedly transporting more than 40 cattle.
The Puruna Kataka police acted on information provided by local members of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, who intercepted the vehicle.
On inspection, police found dozens of cattle crammed inside the container. Four persons identified as cattle traders were detained, questioned, and later arrested. The seized vehicle, bearing registration number WB 29A 6393, was taken into custody.
The rescued cattle were handed over to Sri Shyam Gosala for care and protection. The incident triggered brief unrest in the locality before police restored order.
A case has been registered at Puruna Kataka police station (Case No. 167/26). Officials confirmed that the arrested individuals have been forwarded to court.
Preliminary investigation is underway to trace the source and destination of the cattle, with police probing whether a larger trafficking racket is involved. Authorities said further inquiry is continuing.
