India’s 17-year-old badminton prodigy Tanvi Sharma scripted history at the Taipei Open 2026, defeating Vietnam’s Thuy Linh Nguyen 21-16, 21-16 to clinch her first BWF World Tour Super 300 title.
With this victory, she became only the second Indian woman to win the Taipei Open after Saina Nehwal’s 2008 triumph.
The Punjab shuttler, a former world junior No. 1, showcased composure and attacking flair throughout the 36-minute final. Clever net play and powerful cross-court smashes kept Nguyen under pressure, while Tanvi’s ability to recover from early deficits highlighted her maturity on court.
Tanvi’s rise has been steady and impactful. She previously won two medals at a single edition of the World Junior Championships and played a pivotal role in India’s historic Asian Team Championships gold. Under the guidance of coach Park Tae-sang, she has transitioned seamlessly into the senior circuit.
One of the most memorable moments came after the medal ceremony when Tanvi placed her gold medal around Park’s neck, honouring the mentor who shaped her journey.
For India, this victory ended an 18-year title drought at the Taipei Open and signalled the arrival of a new star ready to follow in the footsteps of champions.
