Odisha’s flood situation has intensified with multiple rivers breaching embankments and water levels rising dangerously across districts.

In Jajpur, seven breaches have been reported in three rivers — four on the Brahmani, two on the Kani (a distributary of the Baitarani), and one on the Nua Mahara of the Kharasrota. Nearly 250 villages are inundated, affecting over one lakh people, with more than 10,000 evacuated to safer shelters.

In Bhadrak, the Salandi River surged to 18.50 feet at Rajghat, above the danger mark of 17.00 feet, flooding Bhadrak, Chandbali, Tihidi, and Dhamnagar blocks. Rising waters in the Kansabansa and Gamei rivers have impacted seven panchayats in Basudevpur.

In Puri, the Devi and Bhargavi rivers flowed above danger levels. At Balanga, the Bhargavi reached 11.25 feet against the danger mark of 10.42 feet, while the Devi at Bauriakana rose to 5.08 feet, exceeding its danger level of 4.95 feet.

Elsewhere, Kujang block in Paradip saw five villages cut off, while Daspalla’s Gania block reported 30 villages marooned. In Athgarh, floodwaters entered the Ansupa lake, affecting Tigiria and Banki blocks. Balasore’s Remuna block also reported severe damage to homes and crops.

Authorities are on high alert as the Mahanadi river continues to swell, with discharge at Mundali crossing 8.73 lakh cusecs per second, just below the danger threshold. Downstream districts including Khordha, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, and Puri are expected to face further impact.
