A suspected criminal was injured in a police encounter near the IB cremation ground under the Brajarajnagar police station limits in Odisha’s Jharsuguda district late on Sunday night after allegedly firing at a police team during an operation.
The injured person has been identified as Ankit Ghosh (23), who was immediately shifted to the Jharsuguda District Headquarters Hospital for treatment after sustaining a bullet injury to his right leg.
According to Jharsuguda SDPO Chintamani Pradhan, police received information about the presence of several suspected anti-social elements near a community hall close to the IB cremation ground. Acting on the tip-off, a police team rushed to the spot to verify the information.
Police alleged that as officers approached the location, the suspects attempted to flee. During the operation, Ankit Ghosh allegedly opened fire at the police team and fired around five rounds, prompting officers to retaliate.
In the exchange of fire, police reportedly fired four rounds, one of which struck Ankit Ghosh in the right leg. He was overpowered and taken into custody before being admitted to hospital for medical treatment.
Police said no personnel were injured during the operation.
Officials further stated that Ankit Ghosh is a history-sheeter with multiple criminal cases registered against him at different police stations across Jharsuguda district. Further investigation is underway to determine the involvement of other suspects who managed to escape from the spot.
Police have also intensified efforts to trace and apprehend the remaining accused involved in the incident.
