The holy month of Sawan (Shravan) is considered one of the most sacred periods for the worship of Lord Shiva. Devotees across India observe Sawan Somwar Vrat on every Monday of the month, seeking blessings for good health, inner peace, family harmony, prosperity, and spiritual growth.

In 2026, the month of Sawan begins on July 30, with four Mondays dedicated to Lord Shiva.

How to Observe Sawan Somwar Vrat

Choose a Suitable Fasting Method

Devotees may observe the fast according to their health, family traditions, and personal capacity. Common fasting practices include:

  • Consuming only fruits and milk
  • Eating one simple sattvik meal
  • Avoiding grains, onion, garlic, alcohol, and non-vegetarian food

Beginners are advised to choose a fasting method that is manageable and sustainable.

Begin the Day with Purity

Wake up early, take a bath, and wear clean, preferably light-coloured or white clothes. Clean the home temple or prayer space before starting the worship.

Take a Sankalp (Sacred Resolve)

Offer prayers before Lord Shiva and make a sincere resolve for the fast. Devotees may dedicate the vrat for spiritual well-being, peace, good health, or family welfare.

Perform Jalabhishek

Offer water to the Shivling while chanting “Om Namah Shivaya.” If possible, visit a Shiva temple. Otherwise, the ritual can be performed at home.

Offerings may include:

  • Bilva (Bel) leaves
  • Milk
  • White flowers
  • Sandalwood paste
  • Honey
  • Curd
  • Ghee
  • Fruits
  • Akshat (rice)

Avoid offering Tulsi leaves, as they are not traditionally offered to Lord Shiva.

Chant Shiva Mantras

Devotees commonly chant:

  • Om Namah Shivaya (108 times)
  • Mahamrityunjaya Mantra for protection, courage, and well-being

Eat Only Vrat-Friendly Foods

Those observing the fast may consume:

  • Fruits
  • Milk and curd
  • Sabudana
  • Makhana
  • Coconut water
  • Dry fruits
  • Light sattvik meals

Avoid overeating after breaking the fast.

Practise Self-Discipline

Sawan Somwar Vrat is not limited to food restrictions. Devotees are encouraged to:

  • Remain calm
  • Avoid anger and harsh speech
  • Stay away from gossip and negativity
  • Spend time in prayer, meditation, or listening to Shiva bhajans

Break the Fast Mindfully

The fast is generally concluded after evening prayers, following family traditions. Eat light, simple, and sattvik food while expressing gratitude to Lord Shiva.
