DMK Likely to Back Delimitation Bill, Boosting NDA’s Numbers

DMK support for Delimitation Bill

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is likely to support the NDA government’s proposed Delimitation Bill, a move that could significantly strengthen the BJP‑led alliance’s bid to secure the two‑thirds majority required to pass the constitutional amendment.

Revolutionary Socialist Party MP N.K. Premachandran claimed after Sunday’s all‑party meeting that the M.K. Stalin‑led DMK had agreed to back the legislation.

Although the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026 has not yet been listed for passage in the Monsoon Session, officials remain optimistic about gathering the numbers. The reported shift marks a major change in DMK’s position, as the party had earlier opposed delimitation over concerns that southern states could lose representation. In recent months, however, DMK has softened its stance, citing Tamil Nadu’s interests over opposition unity following its exit from the INDIA bloc. The DMK has since indicated it will judge the legislation based on its impact on Tamil Nadu rather than opposition unity….

According to reports, the NDA’s revised proposal includes a uniform 50% increase in Lok Sabha seats across all states, addressing concerns of imbalance. The Bill proposes raising the strength of the Lok Sabha from 543 to 850 seats, redrawing constituencies based on the latest Census, and enabling the implementation of one‑third reservation for women in Parliament ahead of the 2029 general election.

DMK’s 22 Lok Sabha MPs could prove crucial, with the NDA currently holding 319 MPs and needing 360 votes to cross the constitutional threshold. Support—or even abstention—from DMK could significantly narrow that gap.
