Argentina Face Backlash After World Cup Final Chaos as Spain's Historic Triumph Ends in Controversy

Argentina have come under intense criticism following a series of heated incidents after their 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final.

The dramatic scenes, which unfolded moments after the final whistle, overshadowed Spain’s historic second World Cup title and sparked strong reactions from former players and football pundits.

The defending champions were unable to retain their crown as Spain dominated the final in New York. However, attention quickly shifted from the football to the post-match confrontation involving several Argentine players.

Post-match brawl mars World Cup final

Tempers flared immediately after the match ended as players from both teams became involved in a heated altercation.

According to multiple reports, the incident began when Argentina defender Nahuel Molina allegedly confronted Spain captain Rodri during the celebrations. The situation escalated as players from both sides gathered around the pair.

Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes became the central figure in the confrontation. Television footage showed him grabbing Spain defender Eric García before pushing midfielder Gavi to the ground during the melee.

The referee showed Paredes a red card after the final whistle, making him the second Argentine player sent off in the final after Enzo Fernández’s dismissal late in regulation time.

Trophy presentation draws criticism

Argentina also faced scrutiny during the trophy presentation. Images and videos circulating on social media appeared to show several Argentine players walking away as Spain celebrated with the FIFA World Cup trophy.

The scenes prompted criticism from football commentators, who described the team’s reaction as disappointing after the defeat.

Former Australia captain Craig Foster criticised Argentina’s conduct, saying the team’s sportsmanship “boiled over” after the final whistle. He also questioned reports that some players appeared to turn away during Spain’s trophy celebrations.

Former England captain Alan Shearer also condemned the post-match confrontation, saying there was “a way to lose” and that physical altercations had no place in football.

Meanwhile, former Scotland international Craig Burley described Argentina’s overall display as disappointing, pointing to both their performance on the pitch and their conduct after the match.

Spain dominate from start to finish

Spain controlled much of the final and created significantly more scoring opportunities than Argentina.

Substitute Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute to secure a 1-0 victory after extra time and deliver Spain’s second FIFA World Cup title.

Rodri led Spain’s midfield with another composed performance, while goalkeeper Unai Simón completed an outstanding tournament with another clean sheet.

Argentina struggled to create chances throughout the match and finished the contest with only two shots while playing the closing stages with 10 players following Enzo Fernández’s red card.

Emotional end for Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi was visibly emotional after the final whistle following Argentina’s defeat. The 39-year-old captain was unable to add to his World Cup legacy as Spain ended Argentina’s reign as world champions.

Several football figures also expressed sympathy for Messi, saying the post-match incidents overshadowed what could be his final FIFA World Cup appearance.

While Spain celebrated a deserved triumph after an impressive tournament, the dramatic scenes following the final whistle ensured the match will be remembered for both its football and its controversy.
