In a major cyber security initiative during the ongoing Rath Yatra 2026, the Cyber Crime Unit of the CID, Crime Branch, Odisha has blocked 121 fake hotel booking websites and 33 fraudulent hotel webpages to safeguard lakhs of devotees visiting Puri from online scams.

The preventive drive, conducted between June 1 and July 18, 2026, focused on identifying and taking action against fake hotel booking portals, fraudulent travel websites and misleading online content targeting pilgrims planning their visit to the annual festival.

Hundreds of fraudulent mobile numbers and devices blocked

As part of the operation, the Cyber Crime Unit also removed or blocked 19 misleading online contents related to Rath Yatra that could potentially deceive devotees.

Working in coordination with service providers, officials further blocked 893 mobile numbers and 793 IMEI numbers allegedly linked to customer care fraud, fake hotel bookings, e-commerce scams and other cyber offences targeting pilgrims.

The Crime Branch said these proactive measures have played a key role in ensuring a safer and hassle-free Rath Yatra by preventing financial fraud and cybercrime.

Police issue cyber safety advisory for devotees

The Odisha Police have urged devotees to book hotels, guest houses and travel services only through official websites or verified booking platforms.

Pilgrims have also been advised to:

  • Avoid clicking on hotel booking links received through SMS, WhatsApp or social media.
  • Verify the authenticity of websites, contact numbers and payment details before making online transactions.
  • Stay away from offers promising unusually cheap hotel rooms, VIP darshan tickets or special passes.
  • Never share OTPs, UPI PINs, bank account details or debit/credit card information with anyone.

Report cyber fraud immediately

In case of any cyber fraud, victims have been advised to immediately call the National Cyber Helpline (1930), file a complaint through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, or contact the nearest police station for prompt assistance.

The intensified cyber surveillance reflects Odisha Police’s continued efforts to provide a secure digital environment for millions of pilgrims participating in the world-famous Rath Yatra in Puri.
