At least 27 people were killed and 63 others injured after a massive fire swept through a crowded eatery in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district in the early hours of Monday, according to local authorities.

The blaze broke out at around 12:02 am at the Na Ladprao eatery near Soi Lat Phrao 1 Road, when the venue was packed with customers.

Fire Brought Under Control in 30 Minutes

Firefighters reached the scene shortly after the incident and managed to contain the blaze within about 30 minutes, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) said.

Among those killed were nine men and 18 women, while 63 people sustained injuries. Officials said 22 of the injured remain in critical condition and are receiving treatment.

Circuit Breaker Explosion Suspected

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt, and senior disaster management officials visited the site to oversee rescue and relief operations.

According to officials, musicians performing at the venue reported that the fire may have started at a stage circuit breaker, which allegedly caused a power outage followed by an explosion.

Preliminary findings suggest that most of the victims died from smoke inhalation.

Decorative Materials Fuelled the Blaze

Governor Chadchart said the fire spread rapidly after igniting decorative materials attached to the ceiling.

Authorities believe the burning decorations released toxic smoke, making it difficult for people inside to escape safely.

Officials also confirmed that the eatery held a valid licence for live music performances and had undergone a routine safety inspection in April.

Panic Hampered Evacuation

According to Bangkok’s disaster prevention and mitigation authorities, emergency exits were available at the rear of the building.

However, many people reportedly rushed toward the toilet area instead of using the designated exits during the panic, complicating rescue efforts.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident and are working to formally identify the victims. The exact cause of the fire will be confirmed after the forensic examination is completed.
