India is observing a one-day national mourning on Monday, July 13, to honour Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Father Amir of Qatar, who passed away at the age of 74 on Sunday.

As a mark of respect, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced that the National Flag will be flown at half-mast across the country on all government buildings where it is regularly displayed. There will also be no official entertainment during the day.

PM Modi Pays Tribute

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences over Sheikh Hamad’s passing, describing him as a visionary leader who transformed Qatar and strengthened its ties with India.

In a message shared on social media, the Prime Minister said Sheikh Hamad led Qatar to remarkable levels of development and prosperity and would be remembered as a true friend of India. Modi also recalled meeting the former Emir during his visit to Qatar in February 2024.

He conveyed condolences to Qatar’s Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the royal family, and the people of Qatar.

Government Declares National Mourning

The MEA said the Government of India declared July 13 as a day of national mourning in recognition of Sheikh Hamad’s contributions and as a gesture of respect.

According to the ministry, the National Flag will remain at half-mast throughout the country, while all official entertainment programmes have been suspended for the day.

The government also announced that Union Minister Kiren Rijiju is expected to travel to Qatar to convey India’s condolences on behalf of the government.

Sheikh Hamad’s Legacy

Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani served as the Emir of Qatar from 1995 to 2013 and played a pivotal role in transforming the Gulf nation into one of the world’s wealthiest economies.

During his tenure, Qatar witnessed rapid economic growth driven by its liquefied natural gas (LNG) industry, expanded global investments, and strengthened diplomatic partnerships.

His leadership also saw closer ties between India and Qatar, with the Indian community in the Gulf nation growing significantly during his reign. Sheikh Hamad made official visits to India in 1999, 2005 and 2012, helping deepen bilateral cooperation.

Following his death, Qatar declared four days of public mourning.
