Rahul Dravid Emerges as Surprise Candidate for England Test Coach Role After Brendon McCullum Exit: Report

Former India head coach Rahul Dravid has reportedly emerged as a surprise contender for the England Test coach position following the departure of Brendon McCullum from the role.

According to a report by The Daily Telegraph, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has shortlisted Dravid among several candidates being considered to lead England’s red-ball side.

ECB Weighing Multiple Coaching Options

Besides Dravid, the reported shortlist includes former England coach Andy Flower and ex-England spinner Richard Dawson. Other names believed to be under consideration are Kumar Sangakkara, Andrew Flintoff, Mike Hesson, and Justin Langer.

The ECB is looking to appoint a new Test coach after deciding to part ways with McCullum following England’s 2-1 home Test series defeat to New Zealand. McCullum will continue as the team’s white-ball coach.

McCullum’s Test Record

McCullum coached England in 49 Test matches, registering 27 victories and 20 defeats.

While England enjoyed considerable success at home, winning 18 of 28 Tests, the team struggled overseas. The side managed only nine wins in 21 away Tests, including series defeats in India (2023–24) and Pakistan (2024–25).

The ECB reportedly believes a fresh approach is needed ahead of the 2027 Ashes campaign.

Dravid Reportedly Not Keen on Full-Time Role

The report suggests Dravid’s disciplined coaching style, technical expertise and vast experience in Test cricket make him an attractive candidate.

However, it also states that the former India captain currently has “no desire” to return to full-time coaching.

The report notes that England’s Test coaching role could still appeal to Dravid because it would involve fewer year-round commitments than most international coaching jobs, allowing him extended periods at home while remaining involved in the longest format.

Strong Competition for the Position

Former England coach Andy Flower is considered one of the frontrunners after previously guiding England to the No. 1 ICC Test ranking and winning three Ashes series. More recently, he has enjoyed success in franchise cricket.

Meanwhile, Richard Dawson, currently head coach of Glamorgan, has also impressed with his tactical approach and work in county cricket, making him another strong contender for the role.

The ECB has not officially announced its shortlist, and a final decision on England’s next Test coach is yet to be made.
