Tammy Beaumont retirement guard of honour

In a powerful display of sportsmanship that transcended rivalry, the Indian women’s cricket team formed a guard of honour for England’s Tammy Beaumont as the veteran opener brought her 17-year international career to a close during the historic first-ever women’s Test match at Lord’s on Sunday.

Beaumont, 35, walked off the famous turf to warm applause from packed stands and respectful claps from her Indian counterparts, many of whom have grown up watching and competing against the prolific right-hander. The moment, captured by BCCI Women’s official account, quickly went viral, symbolising the growing respect and camaraderie in women’s cricket.

Beaumont made her England debut back in 2009 as an 18-year-old and went on to become one of the most decorated players in the game. She holds the record for most ODI centuries by an England woman (12), was Player of the Tournament in England’s triumphant 2017 World Cup campaign, and etched her name in history with a Test double-century against Australia in 2023.

“This Test match at Lord’s – our first-ever women’s Test here – feels like the perfect occasion to sign off,” Beaumont said before the match. “Playing for England for nearly 17 years has been the greatest honour.”

The gesture from India came on Day 3 of the one-off Test, with the visitors having set England a formidable target of 457 runs. Captain Smriti Mandhana and her teammates stood in formation, bats raised in salute as Beaumont passed between the lines – a fitting tribute to a player who helped elevate the women’s game globally.

Cricket fans and pundits flooded social media with praise for the classy act. Beaumont herself is expected to continue playing domestic cricket for The Blaze and in The Hundred, ensuring her experience remains available for the next generation.

As women’s cricket continues its rapid rise, moments like this at the Home of Cricket remind everyone why the sport remains so special: fierce competition on the field, genuine respect off it.
