‘Anti-India’ Charge? Satluj Writer Asks Why His Film is Targeted While The Kashmir Files Flourished

The controversy surrounding Diljit Dosanjh’s political drama Satluj has intensified after co-writer Niren Bhatt criticised the lack of clarity over the film’s sudden removal from Zee5.

Bhatt also rejected allegations that the film could be used as “anti-India” propaganda, arguing that similar standards should apply to all films based on sensitive historical events.

The film, previously titled Panjab 95, premiered on Zee5 without prior announcement before being taken down just two days later.

Niren Bhatt Raises Questions Over Film’s Removal

In an interview with Variety India, Bhatt expressed disappointment over what he described as a lack of communication from authorities regarding the film’s status.

According to him, the filmmakers have spent years seeking clarity over concerns surrounding the project but have received little explanation.

Bhatt said that if there are objections to the film, the creators should be informed so they can engage in a constructive dialogue instead of facing prolonged uncertainty.

Government Source Cites Security Concerns

According to a PTI report citing a government source, Satluj was removed from Zee5 due to security concerns.

The source reportedly stated that while OTT platforms do not require certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), digital platforms are expected to comply with obligations under intermediary guidelines. The report added that Zee5 was asked to remove the film after authorities became aware of its release.

Neither the government nor Zee5 has publicly released detailed reasons explaining the specific concerns.

Writer Rejects ‘Anti-India’ Allegation

Bhatt also responded to reports suggesting that authorities were concerned the film could be misused by anti-India elements.

He rejected that argument, saying it unfairly singles out Satluj while other films based on politically sensitive subjects have been released.

Referring to films such as The Kashmir Files and The Kerala Story, Bhatt questioned why those productions were not viewed through the same lens, arguing that Satluj is a biographical film rather than a political campaign.

His comments reflect his personal opinion and have not been independently verified by authorities.

What Is Satluj About?

Satluj, formerly titled Panjab 95, is inspired by the life of Jaswant Singh Khalra, a human rights activist from Punjab.

The film follows Khalra’s efforts to investigate the alleged illegal cremation of thousands of unidentified bodies in Punjab during the militancy period between 1984 and 1994.

Diljit Dosanjh plays the lead role of Jaswant Singh Khalra.

The cast also includes Arjun Rampal, Kanwaljit Singh, Suvinder Vicky, and Geetika Vidya Ohlyan.

The project is directed by Honey Trehan and produced by Ronnie Screwvala, Honey Trehan, and Abhishek Chaubey under the banners MacGuffin Pictures and RSVP Movies.

Future of the Film Remains Unclear

At present, there is no official confirmation on whether Satluj will return to Zee5 or be released through another platform.

The film has remained at the centre of discussions over creative freedom, digital platform regulations and the handling of politically sensitive content in India.

For now, audiences continue to await an official update from the filmmakers, Zee5 or the relevant authorities regarding the film’s future.
