Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred Indonesia’s highest civilian honour, the “Bintang Adipurna of the Republic of Indonesia,” during his official visit to Jakarta on Tuesday.

The prestigious award was presented by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto in recognition of Modi’s contribution to strengthening bilateral relations between India and Indonesia.

The honour highlights the growing strategic partnership between the two Indo-Pacific nations as they expand cooperation across defence, trade, maritime security, technology and investment.

What Is the Bintang Adipurna?

The Bintang Adipurna, also known as the Medal of Honour of the Republic of Indonesia, is the country’s highest civilian decoration.

It is awarded to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the unity, prosperity and continued development of the Republic of Indonesia.

By receiving this honour, Prime Minister Modi joins a select group of global leaders recognised for their role in fostering strong international partnerships with Indonesia.

Warm Welcome for PM Modi in Jakarta

Prime Minister Modi arrived in Indonesia on Monday as part of his three-nation tour covering Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand.

In a special diplomatic gesture, his aircraft was escorted by Indonesian Air Force F-16 and Su-30 fighter jets after entering Indonesian airspace.

President Prabowo Subianto personally welcomed the Indian Prime Minister in Jakarta alongside four senior ministers before an official ceremonial reception at the Istana Merdeka Presidential Palace.

India and Indonesia Set to Expand Strategic Partnership

The visit is expected to deliver several major agreements aimed at strengthening cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.

Key areas under discussion include:

  • Defence and military cooperation
  • Maritime security
  • Trade and investment
  • Critical minerals
  • Advanced technology
  • Digital infrastructure

Both countries view each other as important partners in ensuring a secure, stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific.

Sabang Port Project Gains Momentum

One of the most significant outcomes expected from the visit is progress on the joint development of Sabang Port.

Located near the strategic Strait of Malacca and close to India’s Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the port is expected to improve maritime connectivity, logistics cooperation and regional security.

The project could also complement India’s upcoming infrastructure development at the Great Nicobar Port.

Defence Cooperation to Receive Major Boost

India and Indonesia are also expected to deepen defence ties.

Indonesia is likely to expand its purchase of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, with discussions centred on acquiring additional missile batteries.

India is also expected to assist Indonesia in integrating and deploying the missile systems.

Another important development could involve Indonesia procuring India’s indigenous Astra Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air Missile (BVRAAM), developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

The missile can reportedly be integrated with Indonesia’s Su-30 fighter aircraft, strengthening defence collaboration between the two nations.

Partnership on Critical Minerals and Technology

The two countries are expected to enhance cooperation in the critical minerals sector.

India plans to invest in manufacturing facilities for:

  • Nickel
  • Steel
  • Rare earth permanent magnets

These materials are essential for electric vehicles, clean energy technologies, electronics and defence manufacturing.

India is also expected to support Indonesia in developing customised Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), showcasing its expertise in election technology and digital governance.

Strengthening the Indo-Pacific Partnership

Prime Minister Modi’s visit reflects India’s broader strategy of strengthening partnerships across the Indo-Pacific region.

With expanding collaboration in defence, maritime connectivity, technology, clean energy and critical minerals, India and Indonesia continue to elevate their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership while working together on regional security and sustainable economic growth.
