Wimbledon 2026 witnessed one of its biggest upsets as Alexandra Eala knocked out defending champion Iga Swiatek in straight sets to reach the fourth round.

The Filipino star produced a fearless display on Centre Court, while former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina also exited the tournament after a surprise defeat.

The dramatic day reshaped the women’s singles draw and marked another milestone in Eala’s rapidly rising career.

Alexandra Eala Makes Wimbledon History

Twenty-one-year-old Alexandra Eala defeated third seed and reigning champion Iga Swiatek 7-6 (9), 6-2 in a stunning third-round clash. The victory made Eala the first player from the Philippines, male or female, to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam singles tournament.

After sealing the win with a powerful forehand, Eala dropped to the grass in celebration before soaking in the applause from a packed Centre Court.

Speaking after the match, the left-hander dedicated the achievement to her supporters back home.

She said the victory belonged to her country, her family and young girls dreaming of playing on the biggest stages in world tennis.

A Dream Run Continues

Eala’s remarkable performance came despite growing up without dedicated grass courts. She recalled practising on a surface that doubled as a basketball court, making her Wimbledon success even more inspiring.

The rising star, who trains at the Rafael Nadal Academy in Mallorca, had already announced herself on the world stage with a memorable run to the Miami Open semifinals last year, where she also defeated Swiatek.

She will now face 13th seed Jasmine Paolini in the fourth round as she continues her impressive Wimbledon campaign.

Swiatek Credits Eala’s Fearless Tennis

Iga Swiatek acknowledged her opponent’s composure in crucial moments after suffering an early exit.

The defending champion admitted Eala played with greater courage during key points, especially in the opening-set tie-break, where both players had opportunities to take control.

Swiatek had captured her maiden Wimbledon title in 2025 with a dominant final victory but was unable to defend her crown this year.

Elena Rybakina’s Exit Shakes Up the Draw

Former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina also bowed out after losing 7-6 (4), 6-1 to Belgium’s Elise Mertens in another major upset.

Rybakina became the highest-seeded player eliminated from the women’s singles draw, ensuring world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka will retain the top ranking after the tournament.

Mertens advanced to the fourth round, where she will face Czech player Marie Bouzkova.

Madison Keys Battles Back

Australian Open champion Madison Keys staged an impressive comeback to defeat sixth seed Amanda Anisimova 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 in an all-American contest.

Keys progressed to the fourth round and will next face Linda Noskova.

Another American, Ashlyn Krueger, also advanced after defeating Ukraine’s Daria Snigur in straight sets and will now take on Marta Kostyuk.

Men’s Singles Sees Intense Battles

In the men’s draw, Taylor Fritz became the lone American to reach the fourth round after defeating Lorenzo Sonego in four sets. He will next face Alexander Bublik.

Alexander Zverev also progressed comfortably with a straight-set victory over Marcos Giron and will meet Jiri Lehecka in the next round.

Grigor Dimitrov survived a five-set thriller against Matteo Berrettini, while Flavio Cobolli recovered from losing the opening set to defeat Karen Khachanov in another marathon encounter.

Serena Williams Withdraws from Doubles

Serena Williams withdrew from the doubles competition alongside sister Venus Williams due to a right knee injury sustained earlier in the tournament.

The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion expressed disappointment on social media, saying she was heartbroken to miss the doubles event.

Wimbledon 2026 Delivers More Surprises

With the exits of defending champion Iga Swiatek and former champion Elena Rybakina, the women’s singles competition has become increasingly unpredictable. Alexandra Eala’s historic victory has emerged as one of the defining stories of Wimbledon 2026, with the young Filipino now carrying the hopes of an entire nation into the second week of the tournament.
