Mexico created history at the FIFA World Cup 2026 after defeating Ecuador 2-0 in the Round of 32, ending a 40-year wait for a knockout-stage victory and booking a place in the Round of 16.

The memorable win came at the Mexico City Stadium, where goals from Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez guided the hosts past Ecuador in a disciplined and clinical performance.

Mexico Finally Break Their World Cup Knockout Curse

Mexico had not won a FIFA World Cup knockout match since defeating Bulgaria in the Round of 16 during the 1986 World Cup on home soil. Since then, El Tri had suffered seven consecutive eliminations at the same stage.

That long wait finally came to an end as Javier Aguirre’s side produced an impressive display against Ecuador.

Quiñones opened the scoring in the 22nd minute after finishing a perfectly timed through ball from Roberto Alvarado. Just nine minutes later, Jiménez doubled Mexico’s advantage with a composed finish following a smart one-two combination with Quiñones.

The two first-half goals proved enough to secure a famous victory.

Ecuador Fail to Find a Way Back

Ecuador created several opportunities but struggled to convert them into goals.

John Yeboah struck the post early in the match, while goalkeeper Raúl Rangel produced an excellent save to deny another dangerous effort before halftime.

In the second half, Ecuador increased the pressure through Moisés Caicedo, Kevin Rodríguez and Piero Hincapié, but Mexico’s organised defence stood firm throughout the contest.

The South American side’s hopes faded completely in stoppage time when defender Piero Hincapié received a red card, reducing Ecuador to ten players.

Strong Defensive Display Seals Mexico’s Victory

Mexico combined solid defending with efficient finishing to control the knockout encounter.

Goalkeeper Raúl Rangel made key saves whenever required, while the defensive unit successfully contained Ecuador’s attacking threats.

The victory highlights the tactical discipline introduced by coach Javier Aguirre, whose side has now advanced confidently into the Round of 16.

What This Means

Mexico’s victory ends one of the longest unwanted records in World Cup history and keeps alive the nation’s hopes of making a deep run in the tournament.

For Ecuador, the defeat marks the end of an encouraging campaign despite a spirited performance in the knockout stage.

Mexico will now prepare for a challenging Round of 16 clash as they aim to continue their impressive FIFA World Cup 2026 journey.
