Rainfall continued across Odisha on Thursday as the state came under the influence of the Deep Depression that crossed the Andhra Pradesh coast early on September 24.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued rainfall warnings for several districts, with heavy rain expected across southern, western and northern parts of Odisha.
Nabarangapur has been placed under a Red Warning for the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall.
Six districts — Bargarh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Koraput and Malkangiri — are under an Orange Warning for the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall.
A Yellow Warning has also been issued for nine districts — Balasore, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Subarnapur, Boudh, Kandhamal and Rayagada — indicating the possibility of heavy rain.
Deep Depression Crosses Andhra Coast
The Deep Depression crossed the coast near southwest of Kalingapatnam between 11 pm on September 23 and 1 am on September 24, according to the latest IMD bulletin.
The system crossed the coast with maximum sustained winds of 55-65 kmph, gusting up to 75 kmph, before moving west-northwestwards over north coastal Andhra Pradesh.
At 5.30 am on Thursday, the system lay centred over north coastal Andhra Pradesh, about 50 km west of Kalingapatnam, 80 km north-northeast of Visakhapatnam and 170 km southwest of Gopalpur in Odisha.
The system is expected to move northwestwards initially while maintaining its intensity as a Deep Depression for around 12 hours before moving north-northwestwards and gradually weakening.
Heavy Rain Likely Across Odisha
Under the system’s influence, heavy rainfall has continued in southern Odisha, while intermittent showers have been reported from several parts of coastal and western Odisha.
The weather department has forecast rainfall over most parts of the state on Thursday, with particularly intense spells likely in southern and western districts.
The latest warnings have placed Nabarangapur under the highest alert level, while residents in the six Orange Warning districts have been advised to remain cautious as heavy to very heavy rainfall could affect normal life.
