A robbery attempt near Talagumma village in Rayagada district turned chaotic on Thursday when the suspects’ car overturned while fleeing the scene.
The incident left one child injured and one accused in police custody.
According to reports, a group of men attacked a hawker near Talagumma and snatched his cash and mobile phone. They sped away in a car, but while escaping, the vehicle ran over a young boy’s legs. The driver lost control, and the car overturned off the roadside.
Witnesses said several suspects fled toward nearby hills after the crash. Locals caught one of them and handed him over to the police. The injured child was rushed to Rayagada District Headquarters Hospital for treatment.
Kumbhikota outpost police reached the spot and began an investigation. The hawker later filed a complaint at the Rayagada police station. Officers are verifying the amount of money stolen and scanning the area for the remaining suspects.
Police sources said the gang may have been involved in similar thefts in the region. The overturned car has been seized for forensic examination. The incident has sparked concern among residents, who demanded stronger patrols to curb rising thefts along rural routes.
Authorities assured that efforts are underway to trace the absconding robbers and ensure justice for the victims.
