In a swift crackdown on indiscipline within the force, the Odisha Police has suspended Inspector Sujit Kumar Das, former Inspector-in-Charge (IIC) of Sarankul Police Station in Nayagarh district, with immediate effect.
Das is accused of committing sexual assault on a woman from Jamusahi village.
The suspension order, issued by Director General of Police (DGP) Odisha on Monday, cites “gross misconduct and dereliction of duty” against the officer, who was recently attached to the District Police Office (DPO), Nayagarh. The move comes hours after a woman lodged a complaint accusing the inspector of sexual harassment.
In an official order, Odisha Police State Headquarters, Cuttack, states that disciplinary proceedings have been contemplated against Das under Rule 840 of the Police Manual Rules (PMR), 1940. “During the period the order remains in force, he will remain under the disciplinary control of the Inspector General of Police, CR, Cuttack,” the order reads.
The suspended officer will be entitled to subsistence allowance and dearness allowance as admissible under Rule 90 of the Orissa Service Code.
