Three people lost their lives in separate lightning strike incidents in Odisha’s Ganjam and Dhenkanal districts on Tuesday as thunderstorms and lightning activity affected several parts of the state.

The tragic incidents have once again highlighted the dangers posed by severe weather conditions during the monsoon season, particularly for people working or spending time outdoors.

Farmer Killed While Working in Agricultural Field

In Ganjam district’s Sheragada block, 31-year-old Murali Swain of Lanjipalli village was struck by lightning while working in a field.

Following the incident, family members and local residents rushed him to the Sheragada Community Health Centre. However, doctors declared him dead upon arrival.

His untimely death has left family members and villagers grieving, as he was known in the area for his involvement in farming activities.

Cricket Match Ends in Tragedy

Another lightning-related fatality was reported from Dashipur village under the Dighapahandi area of Ganjam district.

Kahna Reddy was playing cricket with friends on an open ground near his home when lightning suddenly struck the area. He suffered critical injuries and died on the spot, leaving his family and community devastated.

The incident serves as a reminder of the risks associated with staying in open spaces during thunderstorms.

Dhenkanal Reports Third Fatality

A third death was reported from Goradia village in Kamakhyanagar area of Dhenkanal district.

Sushanta Kumar Sethi had reportedly gone to a field for work when weather conditions worsened. He was struck by lightning during the thunderstorm and died as a result of his injuries.

Residents expressed shock and sorrow after learning about the incident.

Authorities Urge Residents to Follow Safety Measures

The fatalities occurred amid widespread thunderstorm activity across Odisha. Lightning strikes continue to be one of the leading weather-related causes of death in the state, particularly affecting farmers, labourers, and people engaged in outdoor activities.

Authorities have repeatedly advised residents to:

  • Avoid open fields during thunderstorms.
  • Stay away from water bodies and isolated trees.
  • Seek shelter in a building or vehicle immediately after hearing thunder.
  • Monitor official weather alerts and warnings.
  • Suspend outdoor activities until weather conditions improve.

Weather Conditions Remain Unstable

With thunderstorms continuing to affect several districts, officials have urged people to remain alert and follow safety guidelines issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and local authorities.

Disaster management experts stress that timely action and awareness can significantly reduce casualties caused by lightning strikes.

As Odisha experiences changing weather patterns, public awareness and adherence to safety advisories remain crucial for protecting lives during severe weather events.
