In a spectacular display of skill and courage, BRICS nation delegates were left awestruck as they watched daring life-saving operations at the Odisha State Watermanship and Lifeguard Institute (OSWALI) in Ramchandi on Friday.
The visit formed part of the valedictory day of the three-day BRICS Disaster Risk Reduction Workshop. After in-depth discussions on strengthening mutual cooperation in disaster management, the international delegates were taken to OSWALI to witness Odisha’s pioneering work in water safety.
Dressed in bright life jackets, the delegates boarded boats and ventured into the Ramchandi river mouth, where OSWALI trainers showcased high-risk water rescue techniques used to prevent drowning and manage water-related disasters. The breathtaking demonstrations highlighted swift response tactics, advanced equipment, and professional lifeguarding skills that have made OSWALI a model institution in India.
The delegates were visibly impressed by the precision and bravery of the teams. Many were seen applauding enthusiastically and later praised the institute’s critical role in managing water hazards along Odisha’s vulnerable coastline.“Odisha’s expertise in watermanship and lifeguarding is truly commendable,” several delegates remarked, expressing keen interest in replicating similar models in their own countries.
Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA) Executive Director Dr. Kamal Lochan Mishra and senior officials personally guided the delegation and ensured seamless conduct of the programme. The delegates extended heartfelt thanks to OSDMA for the excellent organisation of the three-day international event.
The visit underscored Odisha’s emergence as a global knowledge hub in disaster risk reduction, particularly in water safety — a domain where the state has gained international recognition through years of experience in cyclone and flood management.
