Kolkata witnessed another major political development on Friday as senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Firhad Hakim resigned from the post of Kolkata Mayor, adding to the growing turmoil within the party following its defeat in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections.

Hakim’s resignation comes at a time when the TMC is facing one of the biggest internal challenges in its history. The party, led by Mamata Banerjee, is struggling to contain a rebellion among its legislators after losing power in the state.

Firhad Hakim Announces Resignation

Speaking to reporters, Firhad Hakim said he was stepping down because he was unable to function effectively in his role.

“I am resigning as Kolkata Mayor because I am not able to work and I cannot disrespect the chair,” Hakim said.

His departure marks a significant setback for the TMC leadership. Hakim has long been considered one of the party’s most influential leaders and a trusted ally of Mamata Banerjee.

TMC Faces Growing Internal Revolt

The resignation comes amid an escalating political crisis within the TMC.

After suffering a crushing defeat in the West Bengal Assembly elections, the party has been hit by open dissent from several MLAs. Reports suggest that a large group of legislators has backed rebel leader Ritabrata Banerjee, creating a serious challenge for the party leadership.

The rebel camp has accused the TMC leadership of adopting an increasingly centralized style of functioning and has called for major reforms within the organization.

Mamata Banerjee Launches Damage Control Effort

With tensions rising inside the party, Mamata Banerjee has reportedly started reaching out personally to legislators across different districts.

Party sources indicate that the TMC chief has been speaking directly with MLAs in an effort to prevent further defections and rebuild unity within the organization.

Several meetings have been held in Kolkata as the leadership attempts to resolve differences and restore stability.

Why Firhad Hakim’s Exit Matters

Firhad Hakim’s resignation is politically significant for several reasons:

  • He is among the most experienced leaders in the TMC.
  • He has played a key role in Kolkata’s civic administration for years.
  • His departure sends a strong signal about the challenges facing the party.
  • The resignation could intensify speculation about further changes within the TMC.

Political observers believe Hakim’s decision highlights the seriousness of the current crisis.

TMC’s Toughest Test in Years

The Trinamool Congress now faces a crucial period. The party must not only rebuild after its electoral defeat but also address growing dissatisfaction among its own lawmakers.

The coming weeks are expected to determine whether Mamata Banerjee can successfully reunite the party or whether the rebellion will lead to deeper divisions.

For now, Firhad Hakim’s resignation has added fresh uncertainty to an already volatile political situation in West Bengal.

What Lies Ahead?

The key questions dominating Bengal politics are:

  • Can Mamata Banerjee restore unity within the TMC?
  • Will the rebel legislators remain together?
  • Could the party witness more resignations in the coming days?
  • What role will senior leaders play in resolving the crisis?

As West Bengal’s political landscape continues to evolve, all eyes remain on the TMC leadership and its next move.
