Miscreants chased and attacked delivery boy Tapas Behera with sharp weapons on Jagamara-Gandamunda road under Khandagiri police limits late Thursday night, leaving him grievously injured and looted his mobile phone and cash.
Tapas was returning to his store after completing a delivery when the attackers struck from behind. He sustained injuries on multiple parts of his body. He alleged that the assault was carried out with the intention of robbery.
Locals rushed him to Capital Hospital, where doctors admitted him for treatment. His condition is reported to be stable.
The attack occurred on a deserted stretch of the Jagamara-Gandamunda road, an area where residents have repeatedly raised concerns over poor street lighting. Locals claimed that inadequate illumination has contributed to several criminal incidents in the past.
Police recorded Tapas’s statement and began examining whether he knew any of the assailants. Investigators are also scrutinising CCTV footage from various locations to establish the sequence of events and identify those involved.
The incident disrupted normalcy in the locality and raised concerns about safety for delivery workers operating late at night. Police assured that strict action will follow once the culprits are identified.
